$$$$$ – Splurge-Worthy Fine Dining in St Andrews

The Treadwell Inn and The Rossmount

Granny's Opinion:
The Treadwell Inn offers excellent food in town and The Rossmount Inn is the same high standard and price, but a mile or so outside. Neither is cheap, but both are charming and original – perfect for special occasions.

Parent's Opinion:
Best saved for a date night or a grown-up celebration, no one really wants to see children in either place. However, do go at lunchtime and sit outside. The Treadwell has a sweet garden and the Rossmount has a huge rolling lawn. My sisters and I often sit at the bar at the Rossmount, it's less fussy and the cocktails come faster!

Top Tip:
You can walk up Chamcook Mountain behind the Rossmount. It’s quite a steep climb, so take Dunsters Doughnuts as a bribe – suitable for kids over 7. Then have a drink overlooking the lawns afterwards on the terrace. One of the best views in St Andrews!

$$$$ – Exceptional Garden Dining

Kingsbrae Garden Cafe

Granny's Opinion:
The heavenly location of the Kingsbrae Garden restaurant both inside and outside, with private rooms, an art gallery and delicious food is hard to beat. It's an original menu with a great cook, beautiful views and friendly staff – a true St Andrews gem.

Parent's Opinion:
This is such a fun option. Call in advance and book a table outside so kids can run free after they have ordered. The restaurant overlooks a huge lawn and sometimes the alpacas come out to graze. Inside is a bit more stuffy, but staff are very accommodating of children and nothing is too much trouble.

$$$ - Family-Friendly Favorites

Char and Chowder

Granny's Opinion:
Char and Chowder is a big favourite of ours with dazzling space and fun food for adults and children - some of the best casual dining in St Andrews.

Parent's Opinion:
Owned by our cousin Kelly Meighen and old friend, Charlie Bartlett we are unashamedly enthusiastic about Char and Chowder. Our children love the wood fired pizzas, the local ice cream and we love the beer on tap and local seafood. The atmosphere is great too. Go after whale watching or fishing on the wharf.

The Niger Reef Tea House

Granny's Opinion:
The Niger Reef Tea House is a delight for lunch or early supper on Friday or Saturday. Do call them to book, as its a locals' favorite: 506-529-8005.

Parent's Opinion:
The flourless chocolate cake keeps us coming back again and again! Our older kids really enjoy the soup and sandwich and all love playing at the blockhouse before and afterwards. Sit outside and admire the view.

The William and Water Restaurant

Granny's Opinion:
The William and Water Restaurant is always busy with great sea views and good food - a reliable St Andrews waterfront option.

$-$$ - Casual Local Eats

The Clam Digger

Granny's Opinion:
The Clam Digger is close to town and justifiably hugely popular with benches and trailer delivery. It produces our children's junk food idyll - the best fried clams in St Andrews.

Parent's Opinion:
They have genuinely good fried clams, although our kids lurrrve the milkshakes! There is a small playground while you wait and you can eat there or get takeout and drive to the near by Bar Road. It's lovely in the late afternoons, particularly if the tide has come in. However, depending on what time you go, there can be quite a wait, so either go early or send an advance party to the beach.

Ossie's Lunch

Granny's Opinion:
Ossie's is about 20 minutes away - a genuine old fun diner on the StJohn motorway - great lobster rolls and a playground. Drive up the adjacent road to buy the best smoked salmon for miles around and enjoy the empty beach there too.

Parent's Opinion:
This was our only source of junk food as children, so we have a nostalgia for Ossie's that is perhaps no longer matched by the quality of the food. However, we do take our kids for ice cream on the way home from New River Beach and mum is right, OvenHead Smoked Salmon is insanely good. OvenHead beach nearby is a beach with shingles, good for a swim but note, there is no shade.
